My friend has been working as a P/T assistant, a day per week, in NYC. She was told that she has to pay all the taxes, which meant she will be an independent contractor. Nothing was written.
After six weeks she had an work accident. She sought medical attention. At the hospital, she asked that the bills will be sent to the employer, as if she was an employee. Soon after that she was fired, proving once again that she was actually an employee. She also had fixed hours, was paid by the hour, on the employer's premises, with employer's tools etc.
The employer refuses to pick up the bills, as if she wasn't an employee. In order to avoid the huge bills (which should be taken care by the employer's insurance), I believe that she has to file as an employee (correct me if I'm wrong).
She has an open choice, since the employer didn't sent her any W-2 or 1099 (and probably he didn't send anything to IRS either).
How should she file? Does she stand any chance to claim she was an employee?

I am wondering about filing taxes this year. In 2006 I moved in with my boyfriend around January. I was not yet 18. I worked for about 4 months as a temp and only made 2000.00 or a little over that. I am also a student if that helps. In July I turned 18 and shortly after that my boyfriend and I got married.
I worked for two more months as a temp and made just over 2000.00.
We were wondering if my husband could just claim me and my student loans/grants. He himself only made 12000.00, well like 12140.00.
For almost 6 months we received food stamps if that has any effect. I know it effects my FAFSA.

I am only planning to work part of the year this year. But the government always wants to take a big chunk of my paycheck in taxes. Knowing that my taxes won't be that big, what should I do to lower the amount the government takes out? I would like to keep all of my money and pay the government at the end of the year if I owe any taxes.

I printed my federal and State returns looking for the EIN number but does not appear anywhere, but I know I entered (wrong) in the W2 information. So then, how can I corrected or it does not matter because that info will not appear in the form 1040?. However IRS will validate my info through my SSN and the company who is paying me.

My mother lives with me and she only has Social Security as an income. Can I claim her as a dependent? Also, my full time college student daughter wants to be "independent" as far as taxes go so that her financial aid doesn't get hurt, but I have heard that I can claim her and still have her be independent?
