My mother lives with me and she only has Social Security as an income. Can I claim her as a dependent? Also, my full time college student daughter wants to be "independent" as far as taxes go so that her financial aid doesn't get hurt, but I have heard that I can claim her and still have her be independent?

If your Mom's only income is SS and you provide more than half of her support you may claim her.

As to your daughter, she won't be considered "independent" for financial aid purposes until she turns 24. Interestingly that's the point where you lose her as a more-or-less automatic dependent child exemption.

If she was under 24, go ahead and claim her and let her know that you did so she doesn't claim herself on her return. If you claim her and she tries to claim herself, her return will be rejected by the IRS.

If she turned 24 or older in 2006, you can still claim her as a dependent if you provided more than half of her support AND she had gross income of less than $3,300.00.

Regarding Mom - depends on her income and how much support she received from you (probably yes). Check with a tax pro (not H&R Block)

Are you asking if you can claim your daughter and she claims herself? If that is the question - NOOOOOO! Only one person can claim someone. If that's not the question, I don't understand
