I have heard that you as a consumer can negotiate with credit card companies to reduce interest rate so that you can get them paid off. How do I go about that?

I'm a small business owner owed $10,000 by a publicly listed company. I provided consulting services; they billled and collected for these services. The debt is still fresh at 60 days outstanding.
Reviewing their Annual/Qrtly & 10-K reports shows they have serious financial problems including owing the IRS, Medical Providers for their self insured employee Health plan and other creditors. The IRS has temporarily subordinated outstanding debt to this company's Senior Creditors thereby permitting them to remain a going concern(for now).
GIven this scenario and many letters, emails and phone calls to the CEO who makes it seem like I may get paid any day, just not today.
What are the pros/cons and possible/likely of hiring a lawyer to pursue this out of state debt versus hiring a collection agency? How do collection agencies price their services? Will they buy the receivables from me at a discount or rather negotiate a % of collected amount. Overall recommendations?

We started a program with "Consumer Credit Counselors" This progarm has us pay the Consumer Credit Counselors, then they pay the credit cards every month. All they do is lower some of the interest rates. They don't negotiate amount owed. The payments are too high for us, so we looked into other alternatives. We found one company that will do it differently for less. They have you pay into an escrow account, and they pay off each credit card individually. They say they negotiate lower balances and interest rates. The payment would be lower and the payoff time cut in half. Does anyone know of any reason we shouldn't do this? Are there any other better ways? WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO GET CONSUMER DEBT RELIEF with no loans?

I am a 20-yr old student, halfway through college. When I began college, I recieved all of those "college" credit card offers mailed to my house. I made the mistake of not cutting up the cards and just threw them away and now someone in my family has used the cards to rack up between $15,000-$20,000 of debt in my name. I do not wish to press charges on them since they are in my family, and my creditors have told me that is the only way I can claim "fraud" on the accounts.

Now I have 4 credit cards in my name that are 6 months or more overdue in payments and I only work part-time at a daycare since I am in school. My parents/relatives will not loan me the money, nor can I drop out of school to work full-time. Creditors are calling me day and night and I just do not have the money to pay off this huge debt. What is my best option? Credit counseling? Debt Management? Bancruptcy? I know there is no "ideal" option but what can I do that would cause the least harm to my credit & future?

My boyfriend moved from the US to Canada 2 years ago. He paid his credit cards for the first year he lived here but now can't afford it and so has stopped paying them. He owes about US $32,000. Can US banks/credit card co's come after him in Canada? Is there some kind of reciprocal agreement between Canada and the US? If he returns to the US with me to visit my family could he be caught? Is there some kind of statute of limitations where the CC companies can no longer collect, say after 7 years as with bankrupcty? The CC co's have his address here in Canada since he was paying his bills but now there's just no way he can and he's thinking about never paying them. Thanks for your help!

I just got turned down for a loan on a ATV.. I'm just wonding what the hell I have to do to get a loan. Last I checked my credit score was in the 700's and I have been making payments on a car on time every time for over 2 years now. I don't have a high paying job, $10 an hour, but I have had it over a year and have lived in the same place for over 6 years. I've not been unemployed since I was in Highschool 17 years ago. I rent an apartment. What is it really that loan companies look for? and what do I need to do to start being approved for them? (if you really don't know, please don't answer, only serious real answers please [I will give a negative vote for all the stupid answers]) I am very fustrated..

At least it seems like I have only been getting them if I don't make a payment, and I called today (15 Aug 06) and received a message that I didn't have a payment due. It would normally be due in about ten days from now. What are the new laws?
