Can anyone tell me about COBRA? I currently have health insurance through my employer. However, when I go on maternity leave I do not qualify for FMLA (I've been there less than 1 year) so during my leave my job is UNPROTECTED. I am worried that I will be fired and replaced and am extremely nervous about losing health insurance for myself, my husband, and our new baby (my husband is a PhD student so I have the health insurance for our family). Has anybody used COBRA? Can you explain what exactly it is and what it does?

Yahoo!'s story on gossip being good at work: http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/jobseeker/tools/ept/careerArticlesPost.html?post=72

Online Webster's Dictionary definition of gossip: http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary

I dunno who assigned or approved of Margaret Steen to write about this, but frankly, this is a ridiculous story and consideration. Coworkers are supposed to get along and get the job done while remaining professional and gossip never EVER helps. If there's something to be said about someone else's behavior or a trend within or beyond the office, it should be said openly to everyone or personally to your superior. Period. There's nothing worse for a supervisor or a boss than to clean up a social mess because of how someone happened to start some mindless immature rumor around the workplace . Gossip ruins productivity and creates unnecessary rivalries and tension where it should never ever occur.

I have a fulltime job, but some things recently happened and I really really need money and I don't have family to go to. Credit cards take to long to get a hold of too. If I go to a restuarant, it will probably take 2 weeks to even train. I've never waitressed before, but I do know they get cash because the tips. Does anyone have any ideas?!?!

I need help urgently!! I have a supervisor who is the epitome of lazy. While at work, he's always on MSN Messenger or talking to one of his friends on the phone. I'm a translator of several languages and so is he, which is VERY demanding. This guy has a Master's Degree, and speaks 5 languages. However, he always pushes the simple task of writing receipts to me even when I'm clearly busy with customers or I'm busy doing a translation, so that his MSN conversation won't be disturbed. His predecessor had a wonderful working relationship because she and I worked as a team. Now, I feel REALLY pressured everyday simply because I don't know how to tell my BOSS to pull his own weight. What do I do? How do I tell him that his laziness is driving me up the wall and making my job load ALOT heavier than it has to be.

I know that for the most part you should address the interviewer by Ms./Mr., etc., but what if they introduce themselves by their first name? Or leave a message by email or phone saying, "Hello, this is....."

Most people I've interviewed with have never explicitly said "Please call me X". I usually just call them Mr. or Ms. and refer to them as such in follow up correspondance.

Has this changed? Should I stay with the formal and polite address or is it okay to call a potential employers by their first names IF they use it when introducing themselves?

I have been applying for different jobs for some time now. Even when I was not really looking to change jobs, I always browsed the ads anyway, just to see what was there. I noticed that some companies would have an employment ad, then it would be gone, then in a couple weeks, the same company was again advertising the same position. And it has happened a few times, making me wonder why they cannot keep someone in the position. So, is it wrong to ask why they are always hiring?

I’m Mexican, I live in the border-town of Reynosa; we have almost 300 factories here. I work as a teacher. I have A LOT of contacts in these factories. I used to teach English, but stopped because a lot of people do it, and I wanted to stand out. I make a living teaching Spanish to Americans working in these factories. I teach French to people working in some of the French owned factories. And I teach Japanese to people working in the many Japanese owned factories. Reynosa has a lot of Korean factories, so I should learn Korean, so I can teach it later on. The thing is I don’t really like the language. I would like to learn Mandarin (Chinese;) I think it’s a beautiful language, but I know Mexico is never going to allow China to open up factories in Mexico because of they are a big competition to us. So I would never make any money out of it. I learned to read and write Greek and Hebrew, and although I like the languages, I haven’t made money out of them. What language should I learn?
