I'm thinking of moving to California to become an actor. What would be good jobs that are flexible with auditions and things that could arise? I have a college degree in English and am not interested in teaching. Any job ideas/tips would be much appreciated.

I'm not saying acting like a total jack a** or anything, just cracking up the people in your office from time to time in meetings or lunches. I thought about this after I told a joke (clean and not insensitive in any way) and cracked up my boss and everyone at the meeting. I love making people laugh, but could it hurt my career?

Which would you choose? If you lived in a truly great place which you'd have to leave to pursue a career in your otherwise lucrative and agreeable profession, would you go, or would you stay and sacrifice the career, find some crummy jobs to keep you going?
Can you also tell me why?
Thanks.

I'd like to know what the average person thinks when I tell them what my job title is. It is a little unusual. Please give your first impressions without looking it up.

I am an Assistive Technology Specialist

Knowing what first comes to your head will help me better explain my job to people and give them an accurate picture of my job.

I dont have it in me to be underhanded. I'd rather tell it to your face how it is- good bad or otherwise.

She has excellent typing skills, and is pretty good with word and excel. She has worked for many years at a big law firm as an executive assistant dealing with famous people from all walks of life and supervising three to four secretaries at the same time. Her dictating skills are tremendous. Her people skills are one of a kind. Anything typing, researching, dealing with people (very important to the regular person) is exceptional. She is now older, and has problems being considered for a postion because of her age. She lives in a big metropolitan area so cost of living is high. She takes care of her disabled brother (my uncle), and I am still in school and unable to help her. This being said, she needs a pretty decent paying job just to make ends meet. Any ideas would help and would be a great christmas present to me. Thank you so very much for your time. Happy holidays.

I have a friend who works for a very large international company that will not be named. She has been with them for several years, and is on a special contract. The employees on this contact receive 401K benefits. At some point in 2005, she volunteered to go work a natural disaster for several months. Apparently since she was not working his original job during this time she was not eligible for the 401K but the company paid it to her anyway.

Now-- when she returned to his original post several months later (after working for the same company the whole while)-- they had an accounting error and neglected to pay the 401K the first couple of months. After complaining for months about this $500 she filed a grievance.

Now-- the company has realized she wasn't supposed to get the initial $2500 he got while she was away, and they are taking THAT money back, along with everyone else's who was in the same situation. Can they do this? This money was from between 8-12 months ago.
