Which would you choose? If you lived in a truly great place which you'd have to leave to pursue a career in your otherwise lucrative and agreeable profession, would you go, or would you stay and sacrifice the career, find some crummy jobs to keep you going?

I would try to find some compromise such as finding a job in my field in a nice place. There are always possibilities and there are no absolutes. I would not take a crummy job just to stay in one particular place. In my life I have learned that there are wonderful places all over the world. Best of luck.

If you're young, you have the option of continuing your career in a less desirable place, and then relocating to the place of your choice with more experience on your resume. If there are no jobs at all in your field in your desired area (like something unusual or technical in a relatively rural, low-income area, say computer design in western Kansas), you might have the option of starting your own company and using your contacts outside the area to generate sales, etc.

My way of thinking: If you stay where you are, the area you like, you'll always wonder what if. Moving back to the place of your choice with a full resume is always easier than the alternative, which is moving way to the new, less desirable area years from now and trying to jumpstart a totally stagnant career with a resume showing cabdriving or bartending for the past 10 years.

I have always believed in "both". I always find a way to do both as I don't do well with ultimatums.
There are always truly great places to live and always ways to earn income in your chosen field. You just have to want both bad enough.
I have found the career choice and once it is built up to my liking, I will be moving to the tropics and working from there.
