A team is a group of people committed to achieve a common goal. It's the characteristics of the team that makes it essential in all organisation: shared values and diversity of experience.

The primary purpose of forming a team is to enjoy the diversity that individual members bring to the team. Each member added to the group his/her knowledge, skills and experience. Often the common goal dictates what level of contribution is required from each team member. The wealth of experience and skills of a team will enhance its capacity to achieve the predefined objective.

The role of a team, in almost any organization is to perform a specific set of duties or function. A team may be permanent, or temporary, depending on the need. An ongoing process may need a permant team to keep that process going, with individual members of that team replacing those leaving. Sometimes a team is assembled to take care of one specific problem, or to provide a one-time function. Teams may operate under the supervision of any level of management, or, in some cases, independant of the normal chain of command.

Depends on the organisational business needs and where the team fits within the organisation structure. Each team may have clearly different aims but they should dovetail with other teams to met the overal departmental, and, ultimately, organisational needs.

Obviously to accomplish tasks and reach goals as dictated by the manager. Teams should be formed when the work load or complexity is to large to fit within the scope of one individual.

Teams within oranizations exist for the sole purpose of tricking workers into believing they are part of management and other decision making persons when they are really just disposable cogs in the machine.
