Does anyone have any ideas of how to mentally keep busy when you're not allowed to do anything?

My job is super boring. I'm a receptionist so I just...sit there. Occasionally the phone will ring and I redirect someone to someone else and it takes like 15 seconds and then I'm back to stairing into space. I'm not allowed to read a book, not allowed to surf the internet or play games on the computer. I pretty much just have to sit and wait for the phone to ring, and sometimes theres 20 min periods of no ringing!!

And the week after this one I have to work nearly 9 hours because some lady is going on vacation so I get her hours. I do not know how I am going to sit there and do hardly nothing from 8:30 until 5. God the 4 hours I usually work drags on terribly, 8+ hours is going to be so much worse.

Do does anyone have any ideas of what I could mentally do to keep busy? It'd be so much better if I could read or surf the internet, but I can't! I'd even be happy with more work to do.

I have a B.A., worked on a presidential campaign, managed political projects, worked as a business development manager, etc. - and now I am applying for bartenders positions so that I can go back to school to do what I really want to do: photography.
While going to school and interning I want a job that is both flexible and relatively high paying and bartending is just that. The problem is that employers ideally want people with no time conflicts - what should I tell them? Bartending jobs are very competitive in Los Angeles and I of course want to work at a place where the tips will be great. The interviewer always remark that this is an "interesting" career change for me which forces me to explain my rationale. I always emphasis that I NEED to make money and that my schedule will work around my job but still feel that it is hurting me. I realize that many artists in L.A. bartend and wait tables, so I my situation is not unique.
Thanks in advance.

I can't make this too long because a lot of you won't read it. So, you will have to trust what I say is acurate without specific examples. I believe an eye for an eye. I have been a very good friend & coworker to others at my job of 4 years. A slightly higher, insecure SOB who has been here 1 1/2 yrs slammed me professionally & personally in front of my boss. What he said has created a huge rift between me and my piers. The information given was innacurate as it could be construed multiple ways. I have worked so hard to establish myself and build relationships here and this jealouse prick TRULY has ruined it in one day. I am out for justifiable revenge in the worste possible way. To all you rightfully vindictive people with cunning and effective ideas, I DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP.

I am currently working for a company but have an offer to work for a competitor. There was a clause in the agreement I signed:
"Non-Competition." The Employee shall not, without the prior written consent of AHGS, at any time during the term of this Agreement and following the date of termination or expiration of this Agreement for the period of six (6) months, either individually or in a partnership or jointly or in conjunction with any person as principal, agent, consultant employee, shareholder or in any other manner concerned whatsoever, carry on or be engaged in or advise or provide any consulting services for *** or its Affiliates including ***, in British Columbia. Notwithstanding the prohibition on investments contained in this paragraph, passive investments by the Employee shall be permitted."
Does this mean I cannot be employed by the other company?
I am not in a "higher up" position.

My wife (she's S.African) and I are looking to migrate to South Africa from the UK and I have a very good CV for my career in IT management, however I'm having trouble finding an agency that would take me on without me being over there. The main push back I'm getting is as a result of being white (most jobs tend to be AA or EE)

My financial situation is really tight right now and I really need money. I'm totally willing to work but I'm still in high school and I haven't even turned 16 yet. Not many people are willing to hire and 15 year old. I've tried going around and asking stores but all have turned me down without even considering. I believe its merely because of my age because I present myself nicely and I'm really polite when I need to be. If anyone can help me please do!

What is your perception of a person of color how is wearing a hair style or head dress that is specific to their culture?

I have been wearing my hair 'natural' meaning I don't straighten my hair with heat or chemicals for the past 5 years. It is always in it's natural kinky/curly/wavy state. The way God made it.

I've been on some job interviews lately and thought that I did fairly well. I have yet to receive a job offer. I suspect that the interviewer thinks I don't comb my hair because it's not straight? I'm not sure how to handle this.

As an employer what is your view?
