I just recieved a "final notice" from a collection agency, (even though this was the first letter I recieved from them) offering a settlement offer on a phone account that we stopped in September of 1997.
I have never recieved any notice from the phone company or any collection agency and I believe I paid our final bill in full back then. Nothing is or has ever been on my credit report regarding this either.
The representative I spoke with was very rude and demanding and told me that she would provide proof AFTER I had set up a payment plan.
I don't want to pay for something that I don't owe. I will write a dispute letter to them and ask for proof; however, meanwhile, she told me that it is me that has to provide proof to them that I have paid this "bill" rather than them providing me proof that a bill is owed.

After over 10 years, can a collection agency report this to credit bureaus if I don't satisify them by paying what I believe is a bogus bill?

this is really embarrassing to say but i've never had a "real" job before and i don't really know how ot get started.
do i just walk in and say i'd like to apply?? should i have my "resume" with me? should i dress properly? any tips would help!
also, when i was younger i helped out a family friend with alot of the office work but i never really got paid for it so i put it down as volunteering (which it technically was) so do i tell them that that was a previous work experiecen or what?>

Hi, I'm a newbie here and also a REAL newbie to investing. I have a beginner question about EPS. I will use CAT as an example

When I add up the net income for one year 927.00 + 823.00 + 816.00 + 882.0 I get 3,548,000,000. So if I divide the outstanding shares which is 635,960,000 I should get the EPS, 5.58. When I look at Google Finance it's said the EPS is 5.19.

Am I doing something wrong? TIA

I don't know what to do because the housing market is very shaky and i can't sell my home because i owe more than it's worth. Please someone, help i don't know what to do. What options do I have. Many people have told me to talk to my lender and see if we can come into an agreement instead of foreclosing my home.

Why do people constantly say that they must have a credit card for emergencies. How stupid is it to pay 20% or so on your emergency? Now you just turned your emergency into a financial disaster. Competent financial planners suggest a 3-6 month emergency fund so that your emergency doesn't become a financial problem. Why then do people own credit cards at all then? A debit card can do everything a credit card can except get you in debt. Oh yes, the rewards! How many people's lives are changed by the rewards vs. those whose lives are changed by massive credit card debt? Oh but I have to build my credit score! Why, so you can make debt payments to get more debt payments? The only debt that you should ever consider is a home and you can get manually underwritten with a credit score of 0. I just don't get all the stupid credit card arguments. Boy, they sure are making all the credit card companies rich though. Why do you own a credit card? What do you all think?

Hi, I bought some brand named shirts on Ebay this morning using paypal & my visa debit card, and was doing some reading here on yahoo and ebay about 'fake' items. I am scared that the item might be fake/pirated or impersonations (whatever you want to call them). The $$ has been deducted from my bank but is at a pending status. The bank told me to wait til I get the items and then if I decide to dispute it afterwards, to do a claim with them. They suggested I contact seller too to see if they will do a refund too before going to bank. I am new to Ebay so would like your imput & how to do this. How can I cancell my purchase. Do i go through ebay or paypal? any 800 #'s out there as I was not able to find one. PS. I got some print out of ways to tell if shirts are fake or not. At home, I have authentic shirts and could use those guidelines to check for shirts but I havent received the shirts yet and wont for a few days yet, I imagine. thanks in advance

One of the head partners wants to use Access to manage his clients/matters, etc. I think he is starting to perceive the program as a sort of fix-all to his current state of disorganization.

Has anyone used MS Access to help organize the inner-workings of a law firm? And if so, do you have any advice about its use?

my family keeps bugging me telling me i need to be making more than my 31,000 salary, but i LOVE my job! i work w/ vicitms of domestic violence. and i knew getting my BA in psych wasnt gonna pay the big bills, unless i work w/ child protection services or obtain a masters, both of which i do not want to do.

i feel like i'm doing okay: i have an apartment (i currently share w/ my boyfriend, but i've been out of the home since i wa 24y/o and i'm now 26) i have a reliable car. i have 1800 CC debt, which is not good, but not in the 10000 either.

am i really such a loser? i really dont know

I've had 2 credit cards for going on 8 months now, never missed a payment and often made 2 payments a month on each of them as I maxed them out and wanted to charge more. Generally at the end of the month I have the entire card paid off but occassionally I'll leave about $200 on there and pay it off as the new paycheck comes in.

I got my credit report today and it still says I'm unrated. Originally I was maxed out with 300 on one card and 500 on the other. The one was raised to 500$ at about 3 months, and the 500$ one was just raised to $800 a few weeks ago.

How can I still not be getting credit? I use my CC for EVERYTHING and always pay it.

We have been renting a new townhome in Miami, FL since September. We believe the home will go under foreclosure before the lease is up due to mortgage fraud on the part of our landlord. We're not sure what to do now except sit and wait, which is really unsettling! How many payments must the owner miss before the house goes into foreclosure? (Our owner missed two payments so far -- we get the notices!) What are our rights as renters? How much notice will we get if the lease is not honored?

I have a petty theft record and an agency that I have applied for to help me find a job, has informed me that I need at least a years worth of job experience at the same place, after the conviction or they cannot work with me. I was honest about it and told them about my background, so I wouldn't have to be paranoid about getting fired later on down the line. Alot of people already working with them, lied about their backgrounds and are currently working, so it makes me a little angry that they are taking me through all this. The l petty theft conviction occurred in January of this year and I am currently on probation for another 2 years. It's hard as hell to find a job and I was wondering, if I could use a friend who is a supervisor for a home care facility to be a reference, stating that I "volunteered" for them for a few years, but didn't get paid much to make a living. He is an employee and all they could do is call. What other proof, could they ask for? No check stubs volunteering

Hi - I've been trying to sell my car. Got a potential buyer and he is concerned by the finance outstanding on the car. I have got the settlement figure and said that he can pay the finance company direct if he wishes for peace of mind, failing that I will pay it out of the proceeds of the sale. Are there any legalities with regards selling a car that still has an outstanding finance agreement?

I have already considered a loan to pay off the outstanding finance, then pay off the loan from the sale, but my credit history isn't fantastic.
