I've had about 6 accounts go into collections. They are all hospital bills. I thought at the time my insurance covered the majority of those visits seeing how I had coverage but I guess they didnt. My credit has been severely ruined b/c of these accounts dispute the fact I have a mortgage, auto loans & credit cards all in good standing. I want to settle the collections accounts but I'm curious on the repercutions of settling. The oldest account is from 2002 & the newest one being in 04/2006. They are relatively small totaling only about $2500. What recommendations do you guys have? I really dont feel I should pay something my health insurance should have paid. But I want to fix this since I've ignored it for so long. I'm clueless when it comes to this stuff! Please Help!!

A friend declared Chapter 7 Bankruptcy last fall before the law change, and his debts were cleared and honestly I cant really say if it is a good idea or not for him to apply for a car loan as his first application for credit of any kind post-bankruptcy. I would tell him to look into credit counciling, but every site I have seen has some kind of a catch or is not entirely unbiased. The loan amount he wants is 15K for a late model used car. His income to debt ratio is excellent now, unlike a year ago when he was not recieving his pension.

Any advice for him considering it is roughly six months since his Chapter 7 bankruptcy discharge and if applying for a car loan is fine at this point?

I have signed a 3 -yrs contract with a debt consolidation company, but last week I received a call which was from the credit card company. They said they denied the "deal" (honestly, I didn't get what they said), and they would sue me if I didn't pay the balance right away. Then I called the debt consolidation company, they said the credit card company was only threatening me. But I am worrying whether it is true, or the debt consolidation didn't want me to cut the payment I paid them every month?

Another question: Anyone know the formula of credit card finance charge?

in 2004 I bought a condo. 2006, my family grew and I needed to upgrade to a larger single family home. I borrowed a fixed payment 71k equity loan (9.5% interest) from the condo to use as down payment for the new single family. currently, the condo is getting rented out (the rent is convering the mortgage payment so it is turning out even) and I have also paid down the equity loan to 11k using my bonus. However, I want to pay off this equity loan sooner, because even though I paid the equity down quite a bit there is still a fixed payment of $500 that I have to pay each month until the loan is extinguished. From my estimates I wont fully pay it off until the end of 2007. Should I borrow from my 401k and pay off the equity loan already? Or should I just wait till the end of the year and use my bonus. I figured paying off the equity now can increase my cash flow.

Also, do you think I can get tax exempt for withdrawal for paying off this equity since it was from my first home.

Suppose you owned a stock for 1 month. In one month, it goes up X %. If you sell it, you must pay a higher tax rate. What is a reasonable % increase to warrant selling at the higher tax rate. If the stock went up 0.01%, then it would not make sense (unless you know the company is going bankrupt the next day). It would be better to hold onto to it and hope it goes up and pay a lower tax rate for holding onto it longer. On the other hand, let's say the stock rockets by 80%. Then, it might be worth it to sell and eat the higer tax rate.
