Do it if you feel that is calling in life. Don't do it if it is a monetary decision.

What is high paying today might not be so in 12 years. But your passion will probably remain the same. If it's what is in you, then it's what is in you.

When I was younger, television repair was a good, honest business. Who would have thought that televisions would become a disposable commodity that nobody repairs? And my dad was a doctor back in the day when that meant you were the highest paid person in town. Now, because of managed care, while doctors are well paid, they are not getting as much money as lawyers and dentists. And dentists used to earn about the same as tenured teachers. But now, with cosmetic dentistry, many dentists make millions a year.

So if you go for the money and after 12 years find the money is no longer there, you'll be disappointed. But if you train to do something you will enjoy doing, you'll be happy.

Good luck.

If your only goal to becoming a psychiatrist is the money then do not go that course. You will make lots of money but you will hate the job and it will be a bad thing. Besides, it takes a lot of money to do those 12 years of school and internship. It also takes a lot of determination. If money is your only goal then you may have a hard time making it.

Only you know that answer. It isn't always about money...money cannot buy happiness. You need to decide in your heart if that is the career path you want. If so, then 12 years doesn't seem like much. It takes some people a lifetime just to get through a BS/BA

If you can do someone some good, it is a nice endeavor. My psychology professors made it sound as if educational and sports psychology were the only fields worth getting into, for many reasons. Ask the head of your school's Psych department. They are usually painfully honest.
