Every experienced investor knows you should diversify your investments a little. I already do, but I have a specific question. Let's say someone is new to investing wants to invest their money and doesn't want to spend a bunch of time learning the types of investments. So I tell them, put all their money in SPY. On one hand, SPY is just "one" investment. On the other hand, SPY is really 500 different companies. By just buying SPY, would you say they're diversified?

I graduated college with a degree in Studio Arts 3 years ago looking to find a career in Graphic Design. It's a really, really difficult career to maintain, and I'm disappointed at the fact that veteran designers tell me to shove off because they can't afford to teach the competition.

Then good luck crossed my path when I was offered to work at a defense contractor with other designers, some of which having 30 years experience. It was considered "grunt" work, but I loved every minute of it. I worked until the contract was over (May '06) and now I'm broke again.

Now today I got a phone call from another defense contractor offering me a position in Iraq for 6 months. I'm scared of going, but the reality of living in debt is a fate worse than dying. If something does happen to me at least I'd have some of my debt paid off, so it wouldn't be a burden on my parents. But if I stay here, I'm never going to get the career I trained and studied for. What should I do?

In the 2006 calendar year I got married and had a baby. I'm trying to detemine the best way to file my taxes in order to maximize my refund. Should my husband and I file jointly or seperately? Also, are there any additional deductions for medical expenses related to the pre and post-natal care of myself and our daughter? I want to have a CPA do our taxes this year, but my husband thinks it would be a waste of money. Would going directly to a CPA be worth the cost or would filing through a program like Turbo Tax with a minimal fee be just as effective?

If you buy stocks when they are on an upswing, then sell them after they go up a few points, won't you tend to make money? I understand that a lot of people make irrational decisions, and gamble more than they can afford without understanding the risk. But, if you are sensible about it, what are the pitfalls?

Hi, I have a question about taxes refunds, I'm not a resident in the USA, I live in Mexico but I usually go to Arizona to do some shopping according to the season, recently someone told me to keep my receips so I could ask for the refunds of the taxes that I paid because I'm not a resident. So I'm wondering if this is correct, that I can ask for the refunds of that money and if it's true, what do I have to do or / and where do I have to go? Thank you very much!

Hiya, I want to get my nose pierced but am concerned as to how the nose piercing will affect my job prospects (im currently a 2nd year uni student).

I want to know whether any professionals be you lawyers, teachers, doctor's have nose piercings or is this generally not done.? If you or a professional you know has got one, has it affected your job, do you regret doing it??

In case it matters, I am not of asian descent. I just really really admire nose piercings.

I understand that I will be taxed on the capital gain that I received for my mutual fund, higher tax especially when I hold my mutual fund and sell it in less than a year. Now how about stock? I believe the income tax on stock will be different since it is impractical to hold a stock for a year and sell it in order to pay less tax... so how is the income tax rate on stocks (capital gain) comparing to mutual funds (capital gain)? (i.e. higher / lower tax rate)

I was out of work nearly a whole year (2005). I had some stock options that I had to exercize or lose, so I exercized them. The result was what appeared to be a $40,000 gain and after all was said and done, I owe them nearly $5,000. I have not been able to pay them so far this year. I got an extension, but I haven't heard from them yet. Who would I have to call to ask that the debt be forgiven?
