Well what it is actually called is running your credit. There are 3 major bureaus Experian, Transunion, and Equifax and they each give you a 3 digit number which is a FICO and that determines how your credit is. The numbers vary from 300-850 the higher the better. Each bureau reports the accounts (major credit cards, department store cards, personal loans done thru the banks, school loans, car loans. Hospital bills, cell phone bills, cable bills, utility bills these do not report on your credit unless you dont pay the bill they will send you to collections.) you have and it reports the high limit, balance, and monthly payments. And I think this is the best way to know how much in debt your might be in.

You are entitled to one free credit report from each of the 3 credit bureaus once a year. This will tell you exactly who you owe money to that is reporting it. This is what is important for you to pay off in terms of credit worthiness. If you are clueless as to what debt you have then you might want to sign up for a credit monitoring service which will tell you every time your credit score changes, something changes on your credit report, etc. Get the free credit reports first before you sign up for any services and do it before Jan 1st so you can still get your free ones for next year!!! Here are some links below. Good Luck!

First. Yes!, Every company that issue you a payment plan or credit will use your SSN number to open your credit file. They list the type of credit opened, monthly payments and any missed payments. Like hospital bills, credit card, car payments, house payments.
But there is no information on debt that you owe such as a personal loan that you get from a family member or friends. Also, your utilities in your house or apartment is not listed on your credit report unless your very late in payment and they will go into your credit report to collect this debt.
Your SSN is tied to you, your credit report, clue report, ect...
Hope this helps

A credit report is quite likely to have most of this type of information on it. I think you can get one free per year from the credit reporting agencies.
