I graduated college with a degree in Studio Arts 3 years ago looking to find a career in Graphic Design. It's a really, really difficult career to maintain, and I'm disappointed at the fact that veteran designers tell me to shove off because they can't afford to teach the competition.

Then good luck crossed my path when I was offered to work at a defense contractor with other designers, some of which having 30 years experience. It was considered "grunt" work, but I loved every minute of it. I worked until the contract was over (May '06) and now I'm broke again.

Now today I got a phone call from another defense contractor offering me a position in Iraq for 6 months. I'm scared of going, but the reality of living in debt is a fate worse than dying. If something does happen to me at least I'd have some of my debt paid off, so it wouldn't be a burden on my parents. But if I stay here, I'm never going to get the career I trained and studied for. What should I do?

Don't be a fool. Look up Nicholas Berg. You can probably find the video of him wearing a hood, getting his head slowly sawn off by insurgents on the Internet somewhere. Is that how you want to die? And have it broadcast to the whole world?

You didn't make it clear why the debt would be a burden for your parents after your death. Did they take out loans on your behalf that they can't pay back? Do you owe them money they need?

Anyway, I know that debt must be a real b**ch, but nothing is worth more than your life. Think about how your parents would feel if something happened to you.

Yet, some gay enlisted man who was a translator over there was discharged for being gay. Now the government has to pay for private translators at however much they offered you. I don't know how much you make, but I'm assuming if you're fluent in another language that your intelligent enough to get a good paying job. That was good thinking; fire the cheap guy and hire some expensive private citizens to fill the gap. I'd say, if it isn't in Baghdad, go for it. Most of the country is pretty stable. If it's in Baghdad, where all the **** is going down, I'd evaluate how much I like having my head attached to my body.

You should go. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity. Not to mention the pay is great and it's really easy to travel to other countries from Kuwait. Be careful and make sure you get a good bullet-proof vest and a knife. Most contractors I worked with over there were not allowed to carry a gun.

Work two, three jobs, and don't waste your money on CDs and Junk food. But DO NOT be so foolish as to accept a job in Iraq! That mess is NOT going to get any better, and it will get a lot worse.

Besides, what's worse, debt for life, or debt for life and being confined to a wheel chair and a clostomy bag for life?

I would go. I think it would be a great career opportunity despite the chance of danger.

I say go, you can't expect your parents to pay your way. Go, get experience you need and your debt paid off.
