The best source is going to Score which is an organization devoted to providing mentors to small business owners wanting to start up a business. It is a volunteer driven nonprofit organization started by retired business executives. However, there are other resources you will need to look into to help get it started and running.
First, the United States Small Business Administration offers loans and information for those interested in starting or running a business.
Second, get in touch with the IRS to get a tax id number.
Third, obtain a website and a merchant account. I recommend getting your own domain instead of a subdomain because it will be indexed better on the search engines. A merchant account will enable you to access business from those who want to pay other than by check.
Fourth, get involved with a food wholesaler or a wholesale club. It will help lower the cost to you on obtaining the products to sell.
Fifth, purchase business cards once you have the website because it can help promote your business. Place it in business card drawings and when you meet people.
Sixth, join both the Better Business Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce in your area. There are benefits to joining both business organizations.
Seventh, start a blog for your new business. A well written blog will keep people returning to your website.
Eighth, register with your state as a business a limited liability corporation (LLC).
Ninth, register with the state as a business and a tax id along with sales tax id.
Tenth, check with the local township, city, or village, or borough about running a home based business regulations if you will be operating it out of your house or residence.
Eleventh, access to a professional kitchen if the business includes cooking or baking when the need for expansion is required. It is not needed sometimes in the original stages of starting a business, but it would when the orders came in frequently because the lack of one can seriously hamper expansion efforts.
Finally, network a lot with other businesses. It can help bring business to you.
