Take some advice from someone who has been in the hole with credit cards before. Don't get one if you can help it. If you must get one, get ONE with a low limit, something you can pay off in a few months. Always pay more than the minimum. If you don't, the interest you pay will be more than the purchase is worth. If there is something you must have, save your money. You may discover you did not really need the item(s) you were buying. Put your money toward something else. A lot of credit card purchases are made on impulse. You will spend more money of you are buying on credit than you would if you were paying cash. Ask yourself, "Do I want it, or do I need it? Am I willing to pay more than the sticker price to get it?" Unless your parents are paying, or you have a full scholarship, you will have student loans to pay back when you get out of college. The average student is in debt $15,000 dollars when they get out of school. I know because I am 35 years old, and I am starting college in January. I have done the research. You don't want to add thousands of dollars in credit card bills to that. Get a part time job while you are in school to help pay for your expenses.

This may have been more advice than you were asking for, but there it is. I hope you don't make some of the same mistakes I did. Talk to your parents or teachers and get their input. I'm sure they will agree with me. As for your question about how did the other people get credit cards, maybe their parents cosigned. Maybe they already have jobs and have established their credit. Maybe the cards belong to their parents. There are also secured credit cards that require you to pay money up front before you ever purchase anything. Beware of annual fees, monthly maintenance fees, and interest rates above 20%. Good luck with College!

Ok im currently 20 yrs old...on my credit report i have 700's fico scores i think im qualified enough to guide you.
I started opening credit since i was 15, i know its deficult to get credit so if you do not have credit cards start your firt one with a jewlery store there easy to get very unlikely will they deny you.
If you have some credit cards say 2 0r 3 keep a rrange of 5 credit cards no more than that if you dont use then is good but i do suggest to use then everi now and then this will increase ficos.....never go over half the limit (so i suggest 10 -20 dollars usage no matter what ...even if it means paying half with cash.
worst thing u can do is use 50 %of limit or go over the limit.......and finally never never cancell any cards nor miss any payments. one card u should never mess with is the student cards that your bank or any company may offer, not only are the rates insainly high but there hard to cancell. be stable and consirvative.......this is the key to good credit use it wisely.
and please dont listen to these negative idiots with a good credit comes a good life. u just have to retrain and check yourself (often)

i should get 20 points for this!
yesh!

Why do you want to commit fraud? No student cards for those who are not students. This is the rule. You must enroll before getting the benefits of a student credit card. Thats the only way. Try getting it by other means and you might have the law right over you.

I agree with some of the above. You don't really need a credit card at your age and they are generally nothing but trouble for young people. If you have the basics that you need and cash from loans or work or mom and dad, at this point in your life you just don't need it.

DON'T GET ONE! DO NOT DO THIS! Credit card companies try to hook young people before they learn money management skills. You can end-up in horrible debt, bankrupt before 21. There have been some well-publicized cases of student committing suicide because they got in so much credit trouble. DO NOT GET A CREDIT CARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it's best just to do plain ol' research.
my opinion is, if they come to you saying "You've been pre-approved", thats great, but chances are there might be some fine-print that has some hidden fees attached.

i got duped into this 5.99 a month fee that goes toward this identity-theft prevention thing, but it also helped get my credit high really fast...

point is, by the time i had already installed it i didn't even know it existed. so just watch for stuff like that... and make your payments on time.

You don't want a credit card. Trust me, at your age a credit card will be nothing but trouble. PAY CASH!!! If you can't afford it in cash, then you probably don't need it.
