Books & Authors - July 2007

[Selected]: All categories Arts & Humanities Books & Authors

I'm 18 atm, and I like many books. This is a list of the books I have read and liked, keep in mind, that some of these are for younger people, but I still like them, even today. Sorry, don't know all the authors

The Seventh Tower series
Left Behind series
All Quiet on the Western Front (though I don't really like the genre...)
Deltora Quest series, at least the orignals
Mists of Avalon
Wrinkle in Time series

I haven't read a whole variety of books, but If you have any suggestions... not Harry Potter, I didn't like reading a hundred pages and nothing happening; Not Star Wars; And not Lord Of The Rings...

I do. It's always been a dream of mine ever since I could write. I've also heard it's many peoples' dream.

Out of all the people who want to write a novel, how many people do you think WILL actually become novelists?

It centers around a male couple and the issues that they encounter in a homophobic highschool. Read as they battle through depression, self-loathing and abuse.

I'm self-publishing my new book about to be published shortly through LightningSource. Here's my dilemma as a self-published, self-marketing author:

1. Do I leave fulfillment to LightningSource/Amazon who will charge me 55% right off the top, leaving me with much smaller margins (the cost of the book will come from my share, the remaining 45%) and focus on just marketing the book? If I take this route, then I can't do much for affiliates and Joint Venture partners, but reduces a lot of S&H overhead.

2. Do I do the fulfillment myself, selling the book for lower than Amazon, worrying about shipping and handling (especially international shipments, refunds, etc)? This approach will give help me pay decent amounts to affiliates, JV partners and bulk resellers, but increases my order- processing overhead.

What do you think?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I hear that boys usually only read books with a lead male character and that females will read either? I think that is really sad. I'm writing a story, so I'm just wondering about your opinion.

"Root snorted...
'Too much ... TV. Thinks he's Sherlock Holmes.'
'That's Professor Moriarty,' corrected Foaly.
'Holmes, Moriarty, they both look the same with the flesh scorched off their skulls.'
And with that elegant parting responce, Root followed his squad into the night air." - from Artemis Fowl, by Eoin Colfer

Can anybody think of any last names for the name Daniel? Or a last name that would fit both Audrey and Eileen?

So I see a typical Yahoo Answers question - "should I read the book or go to the movie" but this time the question is concerning J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of The Rings series.

To my extreme surprise, and dismay, many people answer 50/50 or just go to the movies. JUST GO TO THE MOVIES!??

The Lord of the Rings has had a profound and wide-ranging impact on popular culture starting in the 1960s and 1970s and lasting until today. Thins is almost a 50 year span and young people still embraced it as a countercultural saga.

Its influence has been vastly extended in the present day. Many still utter the phrases "Frodo Lives!" and "Gandalf for President". They books have permeated modern culture with endless rock songs, follow up books, a sting of movies (other that Jackson's), Monopoly games, the entire Dungeons an Dragons phenomena, and so on, and so on.

In the books people shudder at the mention of his name, but why? So he killed a few people! I don't freak out at the mention of Hitlers name!

Writing a story with four sisters. One's an artist, one's a writer, the third is a teacher, but I can't think of another career for the youngest that kind of fits in with the other 3. any ideas?

I always get great stories in my head. Tales of romance and adventure but when I finally write it down. I get bored and the story vanishes. I really hated english class and don't like to write but yet I get these great plots in my head.

1st & 4th books-evil (but not known as evil) DADA teacher (Quirrell and imposter Moody) and Harry encounters Voldy
2nd & 5th books - useless DADA teacher and Harry has a duel (sort of) with Voldy
3rd and 6th books- Order of the Pheonix DADA teacher and no real appearance of Voldy.

I was wondering if the 7th book will be like 1 and 4 with an evil DADA (If they have school anyway)

Also it makes a case for a good Snape. Because everyone thinks werewolves are evil, but Lupin wasn't. Everyone thinks Snape is evil......

Any thoughts?

"Heartstopping action," "mystical adventure?" HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THAT SERIES?

2007-07-10 04:59:09 · 17 answers · asked by Anonymous

I have to read so many classics to fulfill English requirements this year. Recently I finished the unabridged Three Musketeers by Dumas, Leroux's Phantom of the Opera, all of the Narnia Chronicles (great books!) and some of Frank Webster's books. I like old books the best.

What would you recommend? Thanks for your help.
