If you like to read you must read the books. Even is you don't like to read these book will change your mind forever. They are some of the best ever in this genre. Tolkien was a genius.

I read them all when I was in my early teens. You will not be able to put them down. The movies were just icing on the cake.

If you are going to read them, I agree with whitout, start with the hobbit. It is a easier read and gives you a good taste of what is to come!

The books without a question! The movies left some key parts out, like Tom Bombadil and the destruction of the Shire. I understand why Peter Jackson didn't include everything because then the movies would be like 9 hours long. But the books are AMAZING! Tolkien is a complete genius!

The movies, while fantastic, leave SOO much of the story out. They also don't give you the slightest CLUE about how sturdy and resilient hobbits truly are. It also paints a VERY different depiction of Aragorn (and Gandalf for that matter) than the one in the book. Like the fact that Aragorn NEVER tried to hide from who he was. He accepted it when he was very young, in his 20s I think, just after he first met Arwen. (Keeping in mind that he was well into his 80s during the story). None of the power and majesty of either Gandalf or Aragorn was truly revealed in the movies. You also lose really important characters (Ghan-buri-Ghan, Tom Bombadil, the sons of Elrond, Beregond, the list goes on and on). I HIGHLY recommend picking up the book and reading it. You will thoroughly enjoy it.

EDIT: tnk, I was raised reading them over and over from a very young age just like you. I was beginning to wonder if I was the only one with a problem with the depiction of Two Towers. Glad to know I'm not.

The set of books are some of my favorites! I've read them so many times since I was young it's ridiculous! Having read the books long before the movies came out, I will say I was impressed in a lot of ways by the movies but disappointed in others (I was particularly disappointed in the film version of The Two Towers). But if you like that genre of book, the books will leave the films in the dust!

the books are great. and they fully develop the world tolkien envisioned. they can be kinda daunting though...and are not a light read.

if you are a hollywood movie lover... then the movies might be better.

there are differences between the books and movies too [but of course =D]
arwen is a background character and other changes.... to make it more exciting in a film sense.
i would start out with "the hobbit" so you understand the back story more.... it is an easier read.. and is more for kids honestly. Then move on to the others.

Books, the movies left so many questions unanswered, and the books have a lot of plot that they literally just left out of the movie, for example, have you ever wondered what that scene at the end of the third movie was all about? read the books and the appendix, and The Silmarillion, and you'll know. Also, about the lost plot... the entire ENDING to the third book (not even counting the appendix) was left out, did you know that the Shire was invaded?... exactly...

I adore both! I The books are full of fun and adventure just like the movies. The only difference is JRR Tolkien speaks in almost a poem type narrative. If you dont like this then you wouldn't enjoy the books.

The books have a lot of discription. If you like visually based novels then buy the books, if not don't bother.

The movie. I've read the book. Sometimes it puts you to sleep. Legolas, Aragon etc are better on screen.
