In the books people shudder at the mention of his name, but why? So he killed a few people! I don't freak out at the mention of Hitlers name!

JKR wasn't a schoolteacher!

But anyway, People are afraid ofVoldemort's name because he was so evil. At the beginning of his"reign" of power and terror, the name wasn't feared. People feared him, as well as the mention of his name when he became more powerful and more capable of torture and death.

You have to remember that you didn't know anyone hitler killed, and if you did it would only be of them. For some people whos relatives died in ww2 because of hitler do not say his name. In hp I think people feel that saying his name is reminding them of all the terrible things he did, every wizarding family had at least on person that was killed by voldemort (not necessarily personally). I agree its a bit weird though.

I think because like when Jews think of Hitler they aren't as scared but I mean The Wizarding World isn't that big so people really now right away when someone dies. Even when they aren't in The Wizarding World they know when someone magical has died because of the reports would say that they found no cause of death. Also because Hitler did the whole world and not just one country

Voldrmorts name is feared because he killed a very lot of people. He even killed who they called muggles (a.k.a us) He used very dark magic. Actually he mostly used the 3 unforgettable curses. The killing curse, the torturing curse, and the other curse I can't think of at the moment.

Wait here's a list of people that he and his death eaters killed:

Lily &James Potter

Neville's parents

Sirius

Dumbledork

Sedrik

The one old guy from the 4th movie

there's more, I just can't think of any

In magic, there is a belief that knowing a name allows power to exist. By speaking his name, people would be giving Voldemort power.

The Harry Potter series are books written by an ex-school teacher (She taught English as a foreign language in Portugal).

I'm all for a good imagination, but please be careful when you make such a comparison. Or is there such a fine line between fantasy and reality that at any moment you may grow wings and fly away?

Because he killed mercilessly. it didn't matter if it was a kid baby adult or old person. he would kill them no matter what!!! so technically they should be afraid of him not his name but i love harrry potter and dont question it!
