Hi,
Does anyone know of any good fiction authors who write stories based on the 1800's or the 1930's? I am looking for a good book to read based on that time era. Also, I dont want something all romancy, just a good family based book.
Thanks!

This is going to sound strange but it was a book about 3 kids who were sent to the country from the city possibly because their house burns down. The place they are sent to stay is a farm and in one of the girls rooms there is an old straw doll. This doll has magical powers and allows the children to time travel back to the farm in the world war 2 era. My husband thinks I made this up and nobody i have asked can remember anything like it. It has been driving me mad for years.

I picked it up in a charity shop because I liked the cover. I thought it would be a book aimed at children...

how wrong can a person be?

Very good book though. Will finish it tonight!

The super tanker's name is Leviathan. The woman dies and the rest of the book is about her husband seeking revenge on the tanker.

Apparently, the public doesn't finish reading 85% of all books bought because of poor writing.
If you buy goods from any supermartket, and you're not happy with them, you can return the goods and ask for a refund.
Shouldn't this be replicated in the book industry? It might get rid of some of the old authors who refuse to retire, and bring some fresh writing to the party.
What do you think?

Okay, this question is a combined question, I need some thoughts and opinions on how to describe my characters, both pyshically and psychologically. So all you writers out there, your help is much appreciated.

1. I have a hard time describing my characters, their physical image is important to leave a reminder on the reader, so, how could you describe some ones face if you want them to look a certain way, or their certain body types to get a real good image into the head of the reader without over expanding and explaining what they look like?

2. How do you bring your characters to life? Like how do you develop them so they gradually mature their own personality?

i've read all the redwall books to date. and i love all the earlier ones. the current ones to me were very dissapointing. is it because im getting older(22yrs old) or is it because Mr.Jacques is losing his touch. by the way my 1st and fav redwall book is Martin the Warrior.
