Hi,
Does anyone know of any good fiction authors who write stories based on the 1800's or the 1930's? I am looking for a good book to read based on that time era. Also, I dont want something all romancy, just a good family based book.
Thanks!

My suggestion is not to look for modern books baised on a particular era, but rather look for books written in that era.

Charles Dickens for instance set his books in the 1800s because he lived in the 1800s. Same for Sir. Arthur Connan Doyle, and Mark Twain.

Personally I'd start with Great Expectations by Charles Dickens, or perhaps something by Mark Twain or P.G. Wodehouse. Unlce Tom's Cablin by Harret Beacher Stowe is a heck of an exciting book as well.

The classics are classics for a reason...they are good!

A Voyage to Arcturus
by David A. Lindsay

It used the most modern incorrect scientific theory of the time. A very good read.

Since this post is old, maybe you'd like to try these too:
Go to Amazon.com and search:
"Lost from Atlantis Book 1"
"Death by Murder David Lindsay" - you have to search that way or the title doesn't come up. There's a lot of sex and violence in that one but it's not gratuitous.
and "Super Spaghetti."
They're all by David A. Lindsay.

They're free if you have Kindle Unlimited, and you can get a free trial of that - Google how.
If you don't have a Kindle you can get a free smartphone app from Google Play, or read it online - all free.

For Nonfiction try The Diary of Anne Frank I read it at the beginning of 7th grade. Its pretty good. Its not long as it seems. I liked it.

Fiction- Fever 1793 well its pretty good. Its not in the time period though.
There are those diaries by girls but I really dont know the names of the books. Its a series.

I think Gathering Blue would be a good family book.

Hope it helped.

Have you read any of the Amelia Peabody mysteries by Elizabeth Peters? They're about a family of British archaeologists and they are set in a time from from the late 1880s (or so) to WWI. There's an Amazon list of them at http://www.amazon.com/Amelia-Peabody-the-Updated-List/lm/2AGGDFITGUOL9/ref=cm_lmt_dtpa_f_2_rdssss0/105-3463429-1493239 - but if you do decide to read any of them be sure you read them in order as they are highly serialized. IMO the early ones are great fun, but the last few have been dull.

Also, how about Jonathan Strange and Mister Norrell by Susanna Clarke? It's set during the Napoleonic era.
