The best thing I ever did when choosing to write romance was to join The Romance Writers of America. They have a monthly magazine mailed to members as well as local chapters in every state and online email groups. I've learned so much from my fellow members and that magazine, which is called The Romance Writer's Report.
Also, romance editor Leslie Wainger has a book out called Writing a Romance Novel for Dummies. See links below.

To be a reader first then a writer is the logic therefore, you should read the works of the veterans.
Nora Roberts - "the Master of Writing wisdom"
Stella Cameron- dark atmosphere
Johanna Lindsey - writes with humor and vivid woman fantasy
Julie Garwood - with thrill, suspense, romance totally balance
Teresa Mederois- writes with ease and friendly aura
Eugenia Riley- makes every period of time enjoyable
Jayne Ann Krentz - pure mixture of fantasy and reality
Janet Dailey - writes with cool, proffessional, no-nonsense way
Nan Ryan - she knew how to touch hearts
Danielle Steele- the master of realistic bliss and heartache
Janelle Taylor - unique characters
Barbara Eskrine - too much detailed and very believable
Victoria Holt- she knows what fantasy exactly means
Hope this help

Read good ones like Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier or The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. In these books romance gives luster to life and life gives meaning to romance. Avoid bodice rippers and Sidney Sheldon. Anyone with a word processor can do work like that. And word processors are God's gift to people who are spelling challenged. Best wishes.

the best thing to do is read, read anything that catches your attention regardless of the genre. Don't try to be a romance writer write freely let the story happen. If it turns out to be a romance when you finish fine, if not you'll be glad you didn't restrict yourself to romance alone.
