This is going to sound strange but it was a book about 3 kids who were sent to the country from the city possibly because their house burns down. The place they are sent to stay is a farm and in one of the girls rooms there is an old straw doll. This doll has magical powers and allows the children to time travel back to the farm in the world war 2 era. My husband thinks I made this up and nobody i have asked can remember anything like it. It has been driving me mad for years.

It sounds familiar. I can think of two books with this sort of theme, but cannot remember the titles (sorry!) At least you know you aren't crazy. One of them had "fire" or a compound word with fire in the title. Your local children's librarian might remember better than I.
A Wrinkle in Time is a good book, but it is about three kids who travel through space/time to rescue their father in another world.
