My husband's fraternity experience was to drink A LOT and say rude things about people in other fraternities.

In reality, he is still close friends with those guys after 15 years. They don't see each other much, but they have a relationship literally like brothers when they do.

I think fraternities and sororities help replace families for kids who go away to college. It is a social network, but it is also a support system. It helps with loneliness and for people who aren't quite ready to be fully adult and independent.
