Is it because the little girl is supposed to be a young lesbian even though they don't come right out and say it?

I have never read it - but I remember hearing something about it being a positive influence on young (questioning) kids....

But now - the only thing I see online about it is that some Christians have made it one of the 10 most banned books in schools.

Why?

Personally - I think it is dumb to read between the lines and then try to ban a book if you don't like it...

Look at what that did for Harry Potter...
...and Madonna's whole career...

Found on the web:

The Cromwell School District, in Cromwell, CT, is facing a petition drive to remove the book from the school district. The two Cromwell residents circulating the petition want to remove the books because they believe the books promote witchcraft. The petition drivers also seek to ban any materials that deal with witchcraft, including historical works.

Several factors have contributed to the controversy of the book:

1) Death being part of the plot.
2) Frequent use of the word "lord" outside of prayer.
3) Belief that the book promotes secular humanism.
4) Finally, the book has been accused of having sexual content.

wow. I had no idea that this book was banned that frequently. It is one of my favorite children's books of all time. I haven't read it in a while, but I have no recollection of any anti-christian sentiments. Some people must have really picked it apart to come up with that idea. That's pretty ridiculous.
And banning books just because they don't follow your own beliefs is stupid. You don't see athiests trying to ban C.S. Lewis books. (or at least I haven't heard of such a thing). It's pretty egocentric if you ask me.

The censorship attempts stem from death being a part of the plot, Jesse's frequent use of the word "lord" outside of prayer, and concerns that the book promotes secular humanism and New Age religions, occultism, Satanism, and for accusations of sexual content.

I didn't know it was a banned book - My daughter read it last year for her English class. The entire class read it, it as assigned by her teacher (6th grade).
