These days there is much backlash towards Mexicans and hispanics in general, due to the tremendous number of illegal immigrants, especially in California
People may have a difficulty concentrating their opposition on only the illegals, one reason is there is no visual difference. Another is similarity of language. People tired of illegals may resent hearing spanish, which is spoken by Mexican Americans, so legals regrettably get some prejudice from this
Once the problem is hopefully cleared (they returned to Mexico by themselves or by forced deportations) i believe i will have a positive feeling again towards the general hispanic population and the legal Mexican American community, just like 10 plus years ago when illegals were 'only' a few millions and schools, crime, gangs, traffic etc was less problematic
