I'm licensed and have a handgun. I know I need a license to hunt and I don't have a problem getting one. But as a female I want to know where I can go to meet other male/female hunters that can guide me. I would ideally like to hunt deer, but I'm open toother sorts of game. I live in the Bay Area (East Bay) California. I've wanted to go hunting for the longest time. But I have no hunting friends, and as a female, especially being asian I really don't know what people will think, lol. I mean if I walk into a hunting store and ask a bunch of questions, would I be taken seriously? Suggestions, Ideas? Thanks a bunch.

And in response to Mumbai Dream's comment on my question, I'm not here to try and impress guys. Just because you think a woman's place in society is not near the gun your wrong. Because if that's your idea of society, I don't want any part of it. I'm not like you and you don't know me, I have different interests in you, so that doesn't make me any different then anyone else who wants to pursue their interests. You are a prime example of how society can be pretty messed up, and make people want to stay in their shells, and it's pathetic..and I'm not one to stand down because of people like you.

I don't eat a lot of meat, I actually just turned into a Vegeterian, which is a total oxymoron. But I want to try Game Meat, I have never. lol..so if I do end up killing an elk or deer I'd take some meat but most of it would go to whoever helped me, it would be a win win situation!

Bully for You!
Here are 3 sites that may interest you, the first is CA. department of game and fish that will tell you all the rules, and may contain some guide information.
The last one is an actual hunting guide service in CA.
Wild game meat is better than the grocery store meat, it has no additives and is natural. I like elk, but you better have some help (guide service) if you kill one of them, they are huge and heavy. If it is more meat than you can take you may have a donation program in your area (contact the game and fish department)
Good Luck!

Contact the california rifle and pistol association. They have a huge membership and I'm sure they can point you in the right direction. I have to ask, You say your licensed and have a handgun, how in the world did you get a CCW for a handgun in the Socialst state of Kalifornia? Or did you mean a hunting license?
Anyway, you can also get wild hog hunts at Catalina island, hunt antelope up around susanville ca if you get drawn. or even go to places like florida for hog hunts, hunt deer in northern california, or go to other states for guided and non guided hunts for elk, antelope, black bear etc. Look in a copy of the fish and game rules and regs and they usually have hunting guides listed there ( at least they used too).
As for gunshops, in california a real gunshop is scarce. I ran a gunshop for many years, and I always enjoyed talking to new shooters, new hunters, etc. It's a great way to make new friends, help pass on your experience and knowledge and plays a very important part in a new hunters experience. I taught my wife to shoot and hunt, as well as all 3 of our kids. As for me, I started hunting when I was tall enough to hold both ends of an old winchester 30-30 off the ground at the same time. I was born and raised in California, but got out once my kids were born. No way was I gonna raise them there. I moved to the free state of Idaho and never regretted my decision.
I'm glad to hear that there are still some hunters in California and I wish you the best of luck.
Shoot safe

I totally know how you feel! I've met people through a summer camp that I work at, though, that is pretty much all about hunting! So I've met guys to go hunting with through that. But when you go to get your hunting license, take a few hunter education and firearm safety courses! there you'll probably meet some people you can go hunting with!
oh. and game is so different from any other kinds of meats! but it's delicious. I love deer and moose. I've never tried elk though!

First off congratulations on wanting to expand your knowledge and experiences, I'm impressed with your open mindedness (if there is such a word).
Since you are already aware of the basic requirements my advice would be to contact Ca DFG and your nearest sporting goods shop that also sells hunting licenses. Tell them exactly what you've said here, perhaps they already know of others in your situation. Don't be shy about asking questions, all smart consumers get as much information as they can prior to make commitments. If they don't take you seriously they they don't deserve your potential business.
Do you have any idea as to what you think you'd like to try hunting for the 1str time ? Small game, upland game, water fowl, feral hogs, deer etc... ? Also try going to the rec.hunting news group and posting this same question, then you'll get more responses from the non tree hugger crowd.
Feel free to contact me via e-mail if you think I can help you any further.

well this would probably be your best bet..First off i would see about any and all hunting laws on all game species for the area you intend to hunt..You can do that by contacting the california fish and game dept. You can do that by just googling them. Unless you could look them up else where. But Im not sure how california has there laws on hunting with a handgun, but you may want to check that out as well. And on groups or organizations for sportsman and woman, sportsman clubs are a great way to meet diverse groups of people, both men and woman. People who are into fishing, and hunting both. GOOD LUCK!!
any other questions feel free to email me

The California Waterfowl Association is a good place to start - http://www.calwaterfowl.org/web2/supportcwa/joincwa/default.htm
They'll be very glad to have you at hunting events and to teach you all about the hunting in the area. I think they are based in Hercules but they cover all of the East Bay and beyond. Happy hunting!

The NRA has a program just to set up and promote women's hunts. A wife of a business associate goes to the ones in Texas every other year and she has a great time.

take a hunters gun safety course and you'll probably make lots of good contacts. or put an ad in the paper for an experienced hunter willing to help an inexperienced hunter get started. maybe even an ad on Craigslist.good luck. started hunting myself in '91 and never looked back, ( I don't pay for meat anymore and my bad cholesterol has gone down consoderably since I started eating wild meat)

I believe in miracles. I don't believe in Benny Hinn. And I don't believe God works through Benny Hinn or any other man like Benny Hinn. If you seek a miracle seek it directly from God so that He will get the glory and not man. And rememebr it IS for you to judge (rightly). Don't throw your brains out the window.

I've heard good things about Mel Cotton's in San Jose. I drive past there fairly regularly, and while I'm not a hunter, it appears to be quite the place.
Give them a call or go by in person. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to hook you up with a club or group of some sort.
