For the past few months, I've been having issues with my computer when plugging in USB devices. First I thought it was a problem with my iPod, but now I realize it's pretty much any USB device. 95% of the time, inserting or removing any USB device causes my PC to BSOD.

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on an eMachines (ugh, piece of crap) T6544. It's been doing this since around August, I believe. I have had this PC since December 2006, and hadn't had any problems until August.

I've tried System Restore (doesn't even go back close enough to where this problem could have been fixed) and no luck.

How can I stop this nuisance from continuing?

The usual way to fix problems with windows is to reboot and when that doesn't work reinstall.

Whether it'll help you or not I can't say but it's worth a try.

If reinstalling windows doesn't fix it I'd send it in for repair (or try to get a refund if you want something better than eMachines crap though that might be hard). If you've had it since December last year then you'd be within a 1 year warranty period (but cheap computers often have 90 day warranties and your's might be one of them).

You need to stop the usb connection before you take the usb device from the computer, by clicking on the icon in the system tray at the bottom right corner of the screen.

I would look for updates. Try on the eMachines site first and then go to Microsoft. I can't believe how much crap I have fixed just looking for updated drivers and patches, etc.

(Also, did you upgrade to Vista from XP or did your computer come with it? If you upgraded, you may esp. want to look for updates).

Also, have you tried troubleshooting the USB drive itself?

Good luck!

If it happens next time, try to read and find out what the error is all about. Some file got corrupted. You have any virus program running by any chance? Try to disable it and run defrag your HDD routinely.
