I answered a question a couple weeks ago which asked what people thought god looked liked. Most people said that god didn't have an image(I'm not talking about Christ) and that they just viewed him as a very warm and comforting energy. So that got me thinking Do you? and if, so why do you think we give it a gender?(maybe that's not a very accurate word to use).

Not energy, spirit. Even still God is a being with intellect and in that we identify personage with Him. God is referred by Christ as Father, not Mother.
Also we think in human terms and attribute gender to intelligent beings especially when someone who knows calls Him Father.
But in truth God has no physical form and therefore does not have gender as we think of it. He is nevertheless considered masculine in concept.

To answer your question, it makes the semantics easier to digest. In English you have a choice between three different third person singular conjugates, he, she and it. It simply would not make sense to invent a new conjugate to apply to a single entity. In truth the only applicable conjugate is "it" but most people would find that rude. So the reason for god even having a gender is a matter of semantics, the reason for god generally being describe as being male is another matter of controversy which I do not care to discuss here.

Most of my culture has been a patriarchy. Lacking a clearly defined male or female designation we usually use the masculine. I don't assign a gender to God. But I have trouble talking of the Divine It.

Well according to the most ancient religious texts God is a spirit and therefore neither male nor female.

But he created man a sexual being, male and female to continue the species. And for a lot of animals and living creatures that is how their progeny continue.

I call it IT. Always!. And people see it as disrespectful.Especially Christians and Muslims. I personally don't think the creator would be male or female or anything that a Christian or Muslim mind could fathom, which isn't saying much.

My thinking exactly! Man made it up if you ask me.. If a woman had to make it up, then God would be a woman! :)
However if you want a logical answer - The bible says "He made man in HIS likeness and image"; so there u have it.

to show a sort of dominance over the other gender...

"god is my gender therefore i am stronger and more important"

Edit: There are females who call god "Him", whenever they do this, they do not mean that males are more powerful, however, they are conforming to this unknowingly.

..."they" suffer from Spiritual ignorance. God clearly said, "let us make man in our image"...(first, by making that statement, confirming the "Father", "Son" and Holy Spirit)... forming "man" from the dust of the Earth... "He" (male gender)... Its all been completely "documented", in text that has stood the test of the millenniums...

I believe that God has a glorified body. Christ was resurrected, so His body and spirit were reunited. I am pretty sure that is a sign that having a body is a godly trait.
