What camera? I have a canon xti and I just went into a photo shop and asked this same question and they said I just need to hook the camera up by the USB and in the software that came with the camera has an option to do so under the profesional mode.

If you have a different camera you need to stop into a shop and ask them

I was taking photos of the moon a few weeks ago and in the camera's screen I could only make out a white circle nad thought being able to hook it up to the laptop would have been good to see the photo better

ADDITION: I actually just gave it a try and it is fantastic. Not only do you get to see the photo instantly on the computer monitor but it also lets you see all of the camera settings that were used on that photo (focal length, ISO setting ect) Very detailed and you can also set the camera's settings right from the computer, so if you were taking the photos (like a portrait) from a tripod and you had a remote shutter switch yuo could sit atthe computer and direct the camera's settings and take the pictures while you look at them.

Also if you have a canon it is under EOS utility not PRO

Nikon D80 has this feature. Plug your USB on your laptop and after the shot you would instantly see the image on your computer. Im not sure with Canon.

Im using my Olympus E-510 DSLR's video out. I have a portable DVD (or you use any TV with RCA port) hooked via my camera's video port. If im using the traditional mode of shooting via the viewfinder, after the shot, the image appears at TV screen which is easier for the model to see the output. Imagine having a 7 inches screen. Since my Olympus E-510 has a live view mode, having a 7 inch tv for my screen makes it so easy to focus, especially that the camera can zoom in 10x on the area which I wanted to have the perfect razor sharp focus. If you hook up the Olympus E-510 on a TV, or event an LCD projector, thats an overkill, but you could imagine the advantage of this in specific application like doing some photography seminar.

I am not sure with Canon 40D if they have similar live mode feature which is as good as Olympus E-510 or E-3.

The names of these functions may vary, depending on which image software you use, but look under your "file" menu for a selection labeled, either, "acquire," or "import." With your camera plugged in, you should be able to see, on your monitor the image the moment you take the shot.

Pros often use this exact method when doing location catalog shoots. They can see the results instantly, to make the decision for an immediate reshoot, or go on to the next set up.

You need to include the type of camera you are shooting with in the future. You could try using Nikon View 6 it should work with your camera. Go to the "Software Downloads" page and choose the program you want. Keep in mind the one I mentioned is free, others you have to pay for.

Hope that helps,
