People don't live for the sake of laws. Laws are made for the sake of people.

The laws allow society to work together as a cohesive force. Time changes everything so the laws change as well. They are not carved in stone.
The exception here would be the "Ten Commandments" they are carved in stone, and they are universal. But the laws we make as a society do change, they aren't the end all and be all as someone once said. (I don't know where the quote comes from)
A good example would be slavery. It was the law that we as men could own other men. The law stated that proof of purchase must be shown at any time. The law also said that an escaped slave can be hunted down and dealt with as the owner pleased. I don't think these laws concerning slavery would stand in today's society.
So the law was not the end all and be all concerning property. However ...in those days men owned homes and again proof of ownership was required in legal cases. The same holds for today. We can own a house and land but we have to pay taxes and prove we own it just like our great grandfathers had to in the days that they lived in.
I hope this helps to clarify your question. Take care.

If the law was the end-all and be-all, the law would never be broken. The law is just a bunch of nothing. It can be totally disregarded by anyone anytime. The end-all and be-all is what we choose to do and the consequences of those choices.

Law is not definitive. Law is made to govern over people, but as people we have free-will. Law will be broken if it is not agreed to by one's spirit.
