My brother-in-law owns a small business. He lacked some cash flow and I gave him $120,000 in Jan 1, 2007. He considered me as an investor and I have been receiving a dividend ($2,500) each month as per an official special legal agreement. A few days ago, I was surprised to hear him saying that I should expect 1099-MIS to file next year. Now he considers me as an independent contractor. I never did any work for him or anything at all. I need some advice people. Is this a legal tactic on his part? Why is doing this now? How can I challenge him? What are my rights and obligations? What tax form should I really file in this case? Please help! Thank you so much.

Derek Anderson might be a Pro Bowler if he keeps playing like this and the Browns are actually looking like a pretty good team. I know this situation kinda resembles the Palmer/Kitna situation, but let's remind ourselves that Anderson is only a year older than Brady and that Brady Quinn is definitely no Carson Palmer. So if the Browns are confident that Anderson is their QB of the future, why would they keep such an expensive first round draft pick backup? If Anderson finishes this year the way he's playing right now, I can see the Browns looking to trade Quinn, although they certainly won't get a first round draft pick for him.

Cooks and mothers both say that if you use just 1/2 of a canned food you are supposed to store it in a different container. Not just put foil over the can and put it in the fridge.
Why?
So if you have 1/2 a can of beans or spaghetti sauce left over, why can't you just leave it in the can?

A man, whose level of drunkenness was bordering on the absurd, stood up to leave a bar and fell flat on his face.
"Maybe all I need is some fresh air," thought the man as he crawled outside.

He tried to stand up again, but fell face first into the mud.

"Screw it," he thought. "I'll just crawl home."

The next morning, his wife found him on the doorstep asleep.

"You went out drinking last night, didn't you?" she said.

"Uh, yes," he said sheepishly. "How did you know?"

"You left your wheelchair at the bar again."

And I don't mean is that correct, because it is. What I mean is; is that justice? Blaming the victim by making them partially culpable is akin to blaming a murder victim for getting in the way of the bullet or the knife.
And you expect civilized nations to follow sharia law? Don't hold your breath.

Let me elaborate. It's true that gambling winnings are reported by casinos to the IRS. If you do not report these winnings, the IRS will come after you for them if the amount is at all significant.

But ... you can claim gambling losses to offset your winnings.
Say you win 20,000 playing poker. You put the 20,000 on your return as gambling income. On a separate line in the return you claim 20,000 in gambling losses. The IRS will not question your losses up to the amount of your winnings. True or false? That's what I heard anyway. Can someone confirm?
