Because in the past there has been enough ignorance and apathy in the Red States to support their...Republican...agenda regardless of poll findings.

As evidenced by the 2006 election that is changing. The Republican party will not come to understand this until after the 2008 election results wake them up.

Each side designs the polls that satisfy them the most. The questions are developed by highly paid think tanks that can best support the party who requests it. I would love to see all Full Time Americans (those in the middle) refuse to take part in any of the polls and you would find that each one would have a 100% positive results for the party who requested it.

Because they can. Reps are just as bad as Dems, don't kid your self. Both parties are out for themselves and don't really give a crap about you, me and anyone else. Listen to how the candidates answer questions on the real issues: S.S., taxes, immigration, national security etc. Most of these politicians, on both sides of the isle, are empty suites. That unfortunately includes Hilary. She will just bring back Bill's and his cabinette, just like Biush did his dad's.

Like Rome in 410 A.D., American is sinking under it own weight. We are giving the whole country away to anyone who comes here. The politicians are selling us down the tubes. China owns us, we are spending more then we make and there are more and more illegals sucking off the system, Just look at the stats: our jails are full, our health care in failing, and our schools can't keep up. We as a nation are doomed if we continue down this path of destruction. Smarten up and stop this partisan political BS. Think and vote smarter, your future is at stake.

We elect leaders. I can't believe you need this explained to you. We do not elect people to sway back and forth according to public opinion or we never would have won WW2. The elected leaders are to make decisions based on all info they receive (some secret and not released to public because then our enemies would have it) that would be most beneficial to US and future of US.
Too bad there wasn't a poll in the 90s asking if we should fight back against terrorism our just continue to let them do what they wanted with no repercussions, like the Clintons allowed.
Under Clintons we sent a tank after the Branch Davidians(US citizens) and attorneys after terrorists. Thank you Hillary and bubba.

Because the US is not a democracy. These days it doesn't even pass for a republic.

70% of the country is against the Iraq war and for expanding children's health care. So what happened?

Because , when mob rules, we all fail. that's the design behind elected officials and a republic democracy. Public opinions change daily and we agree with things we didn't last week and so on, A politician that doesn't change his or her direction with the wind , is a great politician. You know what your going to get when you elect them.

Same reason the Dem Congress ignored their 11% rating. The rest of the country is now getting a little taste of Pelosi San Francisco insanity politics.

The Republican party has changed dramatically. They used to care about "the will of the people". Now they just care about keeping the power, manipulating the media, and have become whores for the lobbyists.

And why should they care? They've got Diebold! Shame! Shame! Shame!

Because their ideology guides them.

They would rather be right then elected, and often times people who just follow polls make bad decisions and then say "but I was just doing the will of the American people."

So instead of leading the politicians are being led by the masses.
