Once crowned the Queen of modern punk, I hail from Glossop, Derbyshire. I began my career as a teacher, and despite my early foray into fashion I managed to continue teaching up until 1971.
When my first marriage failed, I began a relationship with a well known band manager and it was here that the inspiration grew for what would be my fashion label. I began selling my creations, but I received most attention when the band, SexPistols wore my clothing.
My punk style included chains, safety pins and bondage gear, as well as spiked dog collars. The use of the traditional “tartan” design made my label more controversial and my name quickly became associated with the shock value of my clothing.
Several times, I have teamed up with social groups to use my fashion for a worthwhile cause. In 2006 I accepted a DBE (highest honor of the British Empire) and can now be addressed as a Dame.
