Overheating could be an issue related to the fan(s), the heat sinks, or even an accumulation of dust inside the laptop. If you are concerned, then take it to a PC repair shop and have them open it up and clean it out and ask if they can apply some better thermal compound to the CPU.

This happened to my laptop and the cause was that the fans had become clogged (we have two hairy dogs). I just put a vacuum cleaner over the fans which can be seen from under the laptop and on the sides and once they started spinning properly again, everything was just fine.

if it is already overheating even after a very short period of time, have it checked. your cooling system may not be working anymore. also, try elevating the laptop a bit so that air can flow underneath it and purchase a cooling pad for better heat dissipation.

Stop using it on your lap!!! Serious, they are intended for table top use, not laps or on beds! Fans get blocked and they overheat. Worst case senario is a fried hard drive.
