In my American History class we are learning about the Mormon churches. The FLDS headed by the Mormon Prophet, Warren Jeffs, was started by Joseph Smith in 1830. This is the most traditional of the Mormon churches, as through Prophet Jeffs they still hold onto the polygamy belief which was instituted by Prophet Smith not long ago in the 1830's. While the larger and more politically correct Mormon church is the LDS group which has gone through an overhaul not adhering to the beliefs of Jeffs and Smith.
The LDS group is headed by their corporate President, Gordon B. Hinckley. Mr. Hinckley has been working as an employee of LDS group since 1935 and was named President in 1995. Graduating from the University of Utah in 1932 he began his career with LDS as secretary of the Radio, Publicity and Mission Literature Committee. Prophet Jeffs became leader of the FLDS in 2002.
In preparation for my examination I would like to know how many Mormons belong to each group.
