A background check is to verify character, and your credit history is considered to be related to your character, I agree it is invasive, and personally I don't feel relevant...but the powers that be....what can you do??

Get a No Cost Background Check Scan at https://bitly.im/aNQbQ
Its a sensible way to start. The site allows you to do a no cost scan simply to find out if any sort of data is in existence. A smaller analysis is done without cost. To get a detailed report its a modest payment.
You may not realize how many good reasons there are to try and find out more about the people around you. After all, whether you're talking about new friends, employees, doctors, caretakers for elderly family members, or even significant others, you, as a citizen, have a right to know whether the people you surround yourself with are who they say they are. This goes double in any situation that involves your children, which not only includes teachers and babysitters, but also scout masters, little league coaches and others. Bottom line, if you want to find out more about someone, you should perform a background check.

I think you are right. I am not a lawyer but I know that employers may not ask certain things from applicants. For example a prospective employer may not ask if you own or rent your residence. This is the same thing as asking for someone's credit information.
I suggest you ask the labor office in your city or state if it is legal to make this type of inquiry.
Peace and blessings!

if you are working for a compnay that handles alot of money or personal information of other people a credit check is crucial. It shows if you have a history of fraud or money problems. its not just your credit score and who you have
accounts with. This is actually to protect the company.

I don't know all the reasons why,but i do know that because of the high rate of employee theft, most employers want your credit info to see if it is bad enough to make you possibly want to steal from them.

people that have large debts are considered higher risk for theft or more prone to espionage if it's a secret clearance.
