The breeder I'm getting my yorkie from says she feeds her puppies 'Ol Roy. I prefer Iams, but I haven't had a toy breed in awhile.

Both ol'roy and Iams are some of the worst foods to feed a dog. They are loaded with fillers, by-products, corn, and wheat. They serve no nutritional value to a dog. When buying dog food always read the ingredients. Ever here the saying you are what you eat? those foods are like feeding McDonalds. The foods that are good are...

Eagle Pack Holistic Select. They make a food specially formulated for small breed puppies and adults.
Innova, Evo
Canidae
Wellness
Azmira
Merrick

Stay away from...
Eukanuba
Science diet
Iams
Pedigree
Ol'roy
Purina
Beneful
Nutro
And basically any food you can purchase from a grocery store.
Most all of these companies were involved in the recall so why trust them when they have killed dogs.

With all the recalls there's been, I've definately researched on dog food a lot more. Turns out, Purina, Iams, Ol'Roy- even Science Diet aren't very healthy for dogs. The best way to find a good dog food is to make sure Corn of any form isn't the first ingredient on the package. The first ingredients listed are the ones that take up the dog food, really.
Lamb I've heard usually isnt a good idea, a lot of dogs become allergic.
I'd say Natural Balance or Royal Canin would be one of my top two recommendations. Royal Canin has different types of dog food actually depending on breeds, pickiness, etc. Natural Balance has almost nothing BUT healthy ingredients for dogs in it.

You can get either of them usually at Petsmart or Petco. I'm not too sure they sell those at Walmart however.

In your situation, I'd reccomend feeding Royal Canin. Get the Mini 33 Puppy variety. Later on down the road you can get another, higher quality food, but right now the pieces of food might be too big for her, and the protien in the other food might be a little much for her tiny body (yorkies shouldn't have too much protein in their diet). Please do not feed Iams, or other cheap grocery store brands its all such junk.

Make sure you also have Nutrical and Pedialyte on hand for hypoglycemia and dehydration. And get some Missing Link to start supplementing the food with.

If a breeder feeds Ole' Roy I would be extremely leary of buying a puppy from them...if they feed such a poor quality food what else are they skimping on and what kind of dogs are they breeding?? My guess would be any dog they can throw together to mate and produce and that there is no heath testing..nothing..

Any store brand foods including IAMS/Eukanuba, Pedigree,Purina, Science Diet, etc are low quality..you need to feed a good quality food that doesn't contain cheap fillers such as corn, wheat, soy & beet pulp and that doesn't use by products.

Some good choices:
Canidae, Chicken Soup,Wellness, Merrick, Fromm, Innova, Solid Gold just to name a few.

I have two small dogs as well as a puppy. I reseached alot about dog foods after the recall. All of them are on Canidae. Canidae is great beacuse it has no fillers or any other thing that is bad for dogs. It is formualted for all stages of life so you wont have to change. I highly reccomend it.

Other good brands are
Royal Canin (Special food just for Yorkies)
Wellness

Omg, tell this woman 'ol Roy is one of the WORST possible foods to feed these dogs. How can she be a good breeder and be using such crap food? I used to be a vet tech and seen the results of feeding this food to dogs. Eukanuba or Science diet are good choices....Good Luck and please tell this woman she needs to upgrade her food, it will turn out healthier animals.
