In my American History class we are learning about the Mormon churches. The FLDS headed by the Mormon Prophet, Warren Jeffs, was started by Joseph Smith in 1830. This is the most traditional of the Mormon churches, as through Prophet Jeffs they still hold onto the polygamy belief which was instituted by Prophet Smith not long ago in the 1830's. While the larger and more politically correct Mormon church is the LDS group which has gone through an overhaul not adhering to the beliefs of Jeffs and Smith.
The LDS group is headed by their corporate President, Gordon B. Hinckley. Mr. Hinckley has been working as an employee of LDS group since 1935 and was named President in 1995. Graduating from the University of Utah in 1932 he began his career with LDS as secretary of the Radio, Publicity and Mission Literature Committee. Prophet Jeffs became leader of the FLDS in 2002.
In preparation for my examination I would like to know how many Mormons belong to each group.

This is an interesting question because how do we know that they aren't the same thing? They both claim to be the one true church and they both follow Joseph Smith's teachings from the book he wrote called the "Book of Mormon."
It doesn't matter if you take away the "F" because they're both groups of self-styled latter day saints. Personally, I'd rather be an old day Christian then a self-styled latter day saint.

The FLDS church is NOT the one closest to beliefs instituted by Joseph Smith. The only doctrine you can find that are similar happens to be polygamy, can you name any others? Warren Jeffs is a criminal and has twisted all of the beliefs around. The LDS church currently headed by Gordon B. Hinckley is the same church and has the same gospel that was instituted by Joseph Smith. Currently the LDS church is at 12,868,606 members as stated in the last General Conference statistical report in April 2007. Other stats for this past year were:
Stakes 2,745
Missions 344
Districts 630
Wards and Branches 27,475
Converts Baptized 272,845
Number of Full-Time Missionaries 53,164

I read in a magazine that the FLDS were 3,000 or 30,000 (one of those) and the LDS is 13 million.
"Each Mormon church" as you said is wrong. The FLDS has nothing to do witht the LDS (Mormon) church. ^_^
