front door and there is a sense of small town like neighborhood with small shops, restaurants within walking distance. And not expensive. Is there anywhere like that? And what is downtown like?

I'm into outdoor activities, so I'm cautious as to how much time I'll be able to spend outside if it's drizzling all the time.

Found this out when we arrived...Owners say they have to pay $40 per night to Yahoo for this. This seems like a rip off to us. 2 nights $80... So it cost us $80 for the priveledge of having Yahoo book for us.

Friends of mine (a couple in their mid 40s) are interested in staying at the recently remodeled Hotel deLuxe in Portland, OR (formerly Mallory Hotel). I haven't stayed there and wondered if anyone has seen the new retro-Hollywood style decor (complete with iPod-compatible alarm clocks in the rooms, according to their Web site). Looks interesting, but I'm looking for input from guests.

I am considering a move into Portland and have been reading the other questions and answers as part of my research. I don't mind rain, I love it in fact, and since I presently live in CA high state taxes are nothing new. The only thing I am concerned with would be the job market.

I have a background in Advertising with strong direct mail and managment skills. Can anyone recommend a good recruitment company?

What types of work is everyone else doing in Portland? How is the salary? (I was told that because the cost of living is lower, people make a lot less, so I am curious if this is correct.)

Any other good advice?

Thanks, in advance, to everyone for helping. : )

Okay, so it's not quite "Travel" per-se, but I'm considering moving to the Portland area. I love Seattle, it will always be my hometown, but it's getting really crowded (not to mention expensive) here. There are a couple things regarding moving southward I'm not too sure of, however.

1) Which city would be better to live in - Vancouver, WA or Portland, OR and why? (Take into consideration cost-of-living as well as housing costs, commutes, etc).

2) Because of difference in taxes (i.e. WA has sales tax, OR has income tax) what would happen if, say, I moved to Vancouver and held a job in Portland or vice versa - how does the income tax play out?

Hi there,

I currently live in Boston and am considering a move to the Greater Portland area (including Washington State). I have two questions and would appreciate some help from whomever is around!

First, since I have never been to the Pacific Northwest, I have only heard this as a rumor. Is it usually true that when it is rainy in a place such as Portland, it is a nice day at the beach?

Second, I prefer to live outside of the city. I currently live in Salem, MA, which I consider a nice, liberal quaint town about 40 minutes from Boston. Are there similar places to live in the Portland-Vancouver area that would make me feel less "in the city" and closer to nature and just a charming community?

Thanks!
