I am considering a move into Portland and have been reading the other questions and answers as part of my research. I don't mind rain, I love it in fact, and since I presently live in CA high state taxes are nothing new. The only thing I am concerned with would be the job market.

I have a background in Advertising with strong direct mail and managment skills. Can anyone recommend a good recruitment company?

What types of work is everyone else doing in Portland? How is the salary? (I was told that because the cost of living is lower, people make a lot less, so I am curious if this is correct.)

Any other good advice?

Thanks, in advance, to everyone for helping. : )

The job market is surprisingly strong in Portland, especially in the marketing/advertising world. I'd recommend talking with recruiting and placement agencies 52 Limited and FILTER/TALENT. Also visit PortlandAdFed.com for more information on the local advertising community. Check out the archives of pdxMindShare.com, a Portland-area networking event and weekly job email list. Portland.CraigsList.org is also a great resource to sniff out the job market.

The salaries are less in OR than CA, but so is the cost of living. The benefit to CA residents is if they are homeowners and are able to use the proceeds from a home sale to a much larger house in Portland. Good luck!

SmileyRiley is right on the money. The only thing I can add is that I know many people who moved here, hooked up with a temp agency to get office work (which is plentiful here), and then started networking, hooking in with agencies that cater to their specific field.

If you are mobile enough to do that then I'd go that route. If not then I'd hook up with either a national recruiting agency or industry association and use that to remotely build up your contacts/networks within the Portland area. Portland is a bigger city but still small enough that getting the right contacts can take you a lot farther than simply posting or filing a resume. Good luck!

The cost of living is in fact lower, and people do in fact make less money here and are taxed more.

I can't speak to your specific job skills, but look ahead on Monster or Dice.com or one of those, to see what kinds of work are available. For portland jobs, also check www.oregonlive.com in the classified area. (it's the website of our local newspaper)

Typically service jobs (ie healthcare) are available, manufacturing or tech jobs have all been outsourced to asia/india.
