Portland has great shopping and no sales tax. Here are a few suggestions:

Outdoor Malls - Bridgeport Village (south of Portland) and Streets of Tanasbourne (west of Portland) are both new malls with all of the trendy stores, restuarants, etc. you'd ever want.

Indoor Malls - Washington Square (southwest) is probably the best in terms of size, quality and selection; Pioneer Place (downtown) might even be better because they have some exclusive stores like Saks, and also an eclectic mix of street level stores nearby since it's downtown. Also check out Lloyd Center (just northeast of downtown), Clackamas Town Center, and maybe Cedar Hills Crossing (southwest - not as good as Washington Square though).

Other stuff - Portland is built on neighborhoods, many of whom have a "mini-downtown" with hip shops and services. I think the best ones are:
1. Northwest 23rd - a nice mix of local merchants and trendy national brands. Ride the streetcar there from downtown because parking is terrible.
2. Pearl District - the coolest neighborhood near downtown with expensive high rise condos and shopping to match. Powell's bookstore (largest independent bookstore in the world I think) is perched on the edge of the Pearl at 11th & Burnside.
3. Hawthorne and nearby Belmont District - kind of a chic hippie district in southeast with shopping styles to match, and some of the funkiest coffee shops you'll ever see. Think Haight-Ashbury without the 'tude.
4. Farmer's markets are in many neighborhoods. Saturday Market under the Burnside Bridge (north end of Waterfront Park) is the biggest and strangest. There are many other great ones as well... I enjoy going to the markets in Beaverton and Hillsboro.

As a general rule of thumb, the trendy stuff is mostly in the malls and the suburbs, while the eclectic stuff is in the local neighborhood stores closer to downtown. I travel and shop all over the US and I think Portland stacks up well in the shopping and dining front very well compared to pretty much everywhere. As a direct comparison to the northeast, I would say that the selection of ethnic stuff is a little lower here, but the selection of "earthy" and locally owned shops is a little higher here.

Happy shopping!

The other answers are great, assuming you like the convenience of a mall or the value of outlets. Personally, I think the best place for a shop-a-holic from Boston is the Brewery Blocks, near the Pearl District. Within a few block radius of Burnside, between 10th and 14th, you'll find some of the hippest stores in the state. Lucy.com, North Face, adidas, Diesel, etc. are all there. Others mentioned the Pearl, which is basically due North from the Brewery Blocks closer to Lovejoy. You'll find unique boutique stores vs. chains, with a the class of SF, Chicago or NYC, but without sales tax! Good luck!

I was in Portland last weekend. The downtown area is fantastic for shopping. I didn't have enough time to do it all. You will enjoy it. And then there is Vancouver across the river. Oh, you won't be disappointed. Take the Amtrak to Seattle and Tacoma if you run out of things to do in Portland, but that will take you a long time.

Have fun!

Absolutley. If you like outlet malls then I would check out Woodburn Outlets; the GAP and Old Navy there have awesome sale racks. Washington Square Mall dowtown has a lot of great stores, high-end stuff, great designers and moderate price stores too. I love shopping there. Check out Clackamas town center too, that's my favorite Portland mall cuz it has the most stores that I like. They have everything I need, one-stop shopping for me! Shoes, undies, clothes. The Lloyd center is the BIG mall in town, it had an ice-skating rink inside and has all the stuff that Clackamas has but better department stores. Hope it helps & have fun.

Travel to the beach and hit the factory stores, save some money and work on your tan at the same time.
