The Willamette is the river that goes thru downtown. Depends on what you are looking for regarding demographic and feel. Lots of good places to live though. Welcome to the area.

The pearl, west hills and Lake Oswego and really nice but very expensive. Real estate in the pearl is way overpriced. Some neighborhoods in Portland are safer than others. You really just have to check it out in person.
