Ok, so my first trip to Brazil (Rio) is coming up soon. I'm very excited about this. But, someday I'd like to check out the Amazon region. Thing is, I have no clue where to go, what to do. Travelling to Rio is easy. There is all kinds of information about Rio online and Rio has a huge international airport 15 - 20 minutes from downtown. Of course, Rio also has many hotels. Since I do not like tour groups I'd really like to get information about where to go and what to do in the Amazon region so that I can plan my own trip someday. (Where do I fly into, where should I stay [city], what do you recommend I do, how long should I go, etc). Thanks!

I'm going to be taking a train from Bergamo to Milan and back at the end of the month. The fastest option shows up with a D symbol on trenitalia's website and goes into Milano Centrale. The others go into Lambrate and Porta Garibaldi. These have an R symbol. I think I've worked out that D train is direct and the R trains are regional from their website. Are there any surcharges or do you have to reserve a seat on the direct trains into Milano Centrale?

I've been spending time lately getting the @#$* out of Ottawa, tooling around the Ottawa Valley; am off again tonight, so...

One of us is a vegetarian, and one of us is very much not a vegetarian, so anything too tofu-n-seaweed or surf-n-turf is probably out, but that's the only restriction. Anywhere between Ottawa and Chalk River is fine, really.

Suggestions for other neat places to check out would be appreciated too...
