I read this in "The rough guide to Australia" and could find out why this is so

the big banana is not in QLD it is in NSW
a lot of banana's are grown in QLD so that is the nick-name they get
QLD banana-benders
SA crow-eaters
WA sand-gropers
NSW cockroaches

It is an Aboriginal dreaming story. The gist of it is that the Great Spirit tried to find something for Queenslanders to do. They were hopeless at everything. Eventuallly they were given the task of bending the bananas, which is what they have been doing ever since. The rest of the country has been pretending that bananas are not already bent to protect Queenslanders' self esteem.

Queenslanders have always been known since early times as Banana Benders, as the fruit was grown in many areas, & provided the rest of Australia with Bananas.
Victorians are gumboot suckers cuz it rains alot.
Tasmanians are Apple eater's cuz they grow allot of Apples.
the rest have been coverd except NT that one I dont know.

I have always thought its because they grow lots of bananas up there.

Sandgroper - WA is mostly desert. Crow eater, I have no idea, even though I am one.

lol thats a good one (no offence) im guessing cos the big banana in QLD and the banana trade being so big up that way, hrm what do they call melburnians?

Cause all bananas grow straight and we bend them so that they fit in the box better
