Canvey Island, then Southend. A little further, but much nicer is Clacton. All are easily reached by train from Ilford.

You're not in the best part of Essex for beaches, but you don't have to travel too far to get to your nearest nice one.
Canvey Island is closest but, arguably, it is worth going a little further to get to Southend-on-Sea.
Keep going further round the coast and you'll find more good beaches as noted in the attached BBC Essex link.
I'm impressed if you are off to the beach this time of the year !
