The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (Traditional Chinese: 中華人民共和國香港特別行政區, Simplified Chinese: 中华人民共和国香港特别行政区; Hanyu Pinyin: Zhōnghuá Rénmín Gònghéguó Xiānggǎng Tèbié Xíngzhèngqū; [ pronunciation]) is one of the two special administrative regions (SARs) of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the other being Macau. It is commonly known as Hong Kong (Traditional Chinese: 香港; Simplified Chinese: 香港; Pinyin: Xiānggǎng; Cantonese Yale: heūng góng), which is often written Hongkong in older English-language texts. The Hong Kong Government officially changed the name of Hongkong to Hong Kong on 3 September 1926 [1].

Hong Kong's returned to China since 1997, and become a SAR which have a great extent of self governance except that of military and diplomatic matters. And remains a capitalistic economy with its own currency. The Hong Kong model has been proposed by China so the Taiwan can follow. But due to the pro-independent DPP (green party) was in power the last 8 years so no proper talks was started. Hopefully this will change with the new government. For Taiwan to become a SAR is still a long road but at least we can see now some proper dialogue is in place and the relationship between the 2 sides improves. Unification is so firm a concept for Chinese since more than 2000 years. Taiwan will ultimately come back to the big family but guess this will take some time still.

Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China

According to the official Hong Kong Government Information Centre:
" The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) of the People's Republic of China is headed by the Chief Executive. He is advised on major policy decisions by the Executive Council. The HKSAR has a two-tier system of representative government. At the central level is the Legislative Council which legislates, controls public expenditure and monitors the performance of the Administration. At the district level, 18 district councils advise on the implementation of policies in their respective areas. The Administration, the executive arm of the Government, is organised into the Government Secretariat and departments. Government Secretariat Bureaux formulate policies and initiate legislative proposals. Departments implement laws and policies and provide direct services to the community. The HKSAR has an independent Judiciary. It is responsible for the administration of justice and interprets the laws enacted by the legislature. The systems practised in Hong Kong are prescribed by the Basic Law, the constitutional document of the HKSAR which came into effect upon its establishment on July 1, 1997."
