I am going to San Diego first, then we are going to San Francisco for a few days. I'm going with my boyfriend, but neither of us have ever been to CA, so I'm afraid we might miss out on some great stuff since we won't know where to go. Can anyone give me suggestions? I want to go to as many scenic places as possible, and to some nice beaches, restaurants, parks, etc. Any advice on where to go, park, visit, etc would be appreciated! Also, any advice on some cheap places as well? :) We want to go to nice places, but save some cash whenever possible because this trip is costing a fortune :)

Hi,
Simple question - I have off from Feb 10-18, 2007 for vacation from work, and I've always wanted to go to Salvador for carnaval. It looks like the main part of carnaval/ Mardi Gras day is Feb 20. How much action would be going on from Feb 11-17 (I live in atlanta, and all the flights I can afford take about a day each way, so I'm giving myself a day for travel on either side). So my question is : is enough going on to make it worth the money, or should I go some other time when I get to spend more of actual carnaval in Brazil. I've already been to salvador twice, so I wouldn't be going just to visit the city.

Kanji is not new to me, I know approx. 200-300 kanji (writing that is, as for reading I probably know 500 or so). I consider myself to be somewhere in the lower-intermediate level. I'm learning new kanji right now and I try to remember the two or three examples of kanji combinations that come with every new kanji I learn....but I've been wondering lately, is that really the right way to learn them? I'm going to Japan soon for 1 year, and I'd like to make most out of my stay, so I want to know what I can do to best learn kanji. If I keep doing it my way and just memorize each kanji individually and a few examples, will I be able to read a Japanese news paper without a problem, or is there really another better way to do this on?
