The seat next to me! I don't wear obnoxious perfume, I don't fall asleep and snore, I don't smell like the last meal I ate (**burp**), I don't panic or complain about turbulence, I don't get sick, I don't shush the people around me for talking, and I don't eat with my mouth open. I'm small, and carry on only a small purse. I can have friendly conversation, or leave you the heck alone!
My point is, I think the best seat depends MORE on the passengers around you than the actual location of the chair. Most people are friendly and considerate, but airlines can't refuse a seat to someone just because they are a jerk.
P.S.: I like the window seat. Gives you some distraction when the Jerk next to you keeps elbowing you while he's arguing politics with the lady who is leaning into the aisle to avoid him!
Window Seat! every time.

That depends on you. Of course, First class is where the frills are, but if you mean in coach, that's a different story. If you are a responsible person and want leg room, then an exit row is the place to be. If you are concerned about safety in a crash, then the tail section is the place. If you have bladder problems, then sit near the lavatory, and get an isle seat.
Some airlines have seating charts with filled and empty seats displayed when you book online. I like to sit in a row that has 1 person, either on the aisle or the window, and leave the middle seat open. Travelers are more apt to sit somewhere else other than a middle seat giving you more room.

Well, I've been a T.A. for many years and have yet to have anyone ask for the middle, so we can just rule that one out! If you tend to have to get up to use the restroom, or just to move around a bit, then go for the aisle. If you like lookigndown on what's below, go for the seat. Bulkhead and exit rows are hard to come by, but have more legroom.

First Class
Business Class: For example, on a 747-400, the emergency exit row has a massive amount of legroom.
Economy: Emergency exits or bulkhead seats. These have the most legroom.

if you are traveling first class, I would suggest any seat in the second row, if you are flying business class in a 747-400 the upper deck bulkhead seats are the best, and if you are flying coach the bulkhead and/or emergency exit seats (aisle) are the best

It all depends on the plane. The website www.seatguru.com outlines what are the best and worst seats for each of the different type of planes.
