Flights change depending on so many things. The route you're taking is one. There are many flights from New York to London that link later on to an african destination. But then you could also fly there with Swiss and KLM, which stop in Zurich and Amsterdam, respectively. Generally from the east coast to Europe there's not much difference in time, and I'd be surprised to see a direct flight from the west coast to Europe.

From west coast to east coast, the flight could be around 5h. From east coast to UK, another 5h. And from UK to Kenya, at least 8h. Now if you wanted to go to South Africa that would be closer to 10h. So the flying time in itself would be between 18 and 20 hours. And you have to consider the transfer times. Calculate at least 2h to switch in the east coast's airport and then a 10h stop-over in Europe. So you have to plan the trip over 2 days.
